Provision of Educational Materials of Distinctive Pedagogical Standards.
Message from the Commissioner General

Education is a life-long process in which the child’s character is moulded to bring about a strong personality to face the challenges and conflicts that he encounters in living in the 21st century.

Access to education, is a fundamental human right Hence in the process of formal education, provision of school textbooks, under the implementation of free textbook scheme of the Government of Sri Lanka plays a vital role. In certain situations the textbook is the only accessible resource for the children in remote areas despite of the availability of many modern teaching aids in the society.

Therefore, the Educational Publications Department has taken distinctive measures for progressively widening the range of textbooks of high pedagogical standards to 9746 government schools along with other educational institutions (such as Pirivena, semi-governmental schools, private schools, International schools and so forth.)

The calculated cost for the production of school textbooks for the year 2008 was Rs. 2398,398,719/- . Textbooks under 351 titles in three media will be produced for the year 2009. Thus, a very cooperative effort has been launched at the Educational Publications Department to achieve its ultimate goal of providing the child with textbooks of high educational standards on due time.

Together with the staff of Educational Publications Department, I sincerely wish that we will be successful in this endeavour.
